Vietnam Dragon Fruit Exports Reach Record High in 2024

Dragon fruit has become one of Vietnam’s most successful agricultural exports, playing a key role in strengthening the country’s position in the global fruit market. According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT, 2024), dragon fruit accounted for nearly 36% of Vietnam’s total fruit export turnover, reaching over USD 1.2 billion in 2023. China remains the largest importer, making up nearly 65% of Vietnam’s dragon fruit exports, followed by markets such as the United States, the EU, and the Middle East (Vietnam News, 2024).

The expansion of free trade agreements (FTAs), including the EVFTA and CPTPP, has opened new opportunities for Vietnamese dragon fruit to penetrate demanding markets with higher quality standards. However, exporters face challenges related to strict SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary) requirements, branding, and logistics costs. According to the FAO (2023), the global demand for tropical fruits such as dragon fruit is projected to grow by 4.7% annually, offering Vietnam a strong potential if it continues to invest in sustainable farming practices, cold-chain logistics, and international branding strategies.

Dragon fruit is not only a symbol of Vietnam’s agricultural strength but also a case study of how innovation, policy support, and global integration can turn a traditional crop into a billion-dollar export industry.
