Export: Key Driver for Economic Growth and Global Integration
By Thuong Tran Thi Hoai - 10/09/2025 - 0 comments
Export has become one of the strongest drivers of economic development and global integration. According to UNCTAD (2024), global trade reached a record USD 33 trillion, reflecting the growing importance of exports in sustaining growth. For Vietnam, exports accounted for 86.5% of GDP in 2023 (World Bank), making it one of the most trade-dependent economies in the world. In 2024, Vietnam’s exports rose 14.3% to USD 405.5 billion, helping GDP grow 7.09% and creating a trade surplus of USD 24.8 billion (Reuters, 2025). Exports have generated millions of jobs, attracted foreign direct investment, and boosted innovation through global competition. However, with 30% of Vietnam’s GDP tied to U.S. exports (Reuters, 2025), the country faces potential risks from tariff policies and global trade tensions. This dual reality underscores the strategic role of exports: a powerful growth engine and a challenge in ensuring long-term economic resilience.
1. The Strategic Role of Export in the Global Economy
Export is the process of selling goods and services produced domestically to foreign markets. It is not only a source of foreign exchange earnings but also a critical driver of industrial development, competitiveness, and international cooperation. Globally, exports underpin sustainable growth by expanding markets and fostering innovation.
2. Export and Vietnam’s Economic Growth
Vietnam’s rapid economic rise over the past two decades has been largely export-driven. According to the World Bank, exports contributed 86.5% of GDP in 2023, while in 2024 exports increased by 14.3%, reaching USD 405.5 billion, and GDP accelerated to 7.09% growth (Reuters, 2025). Export-led industries such as electronics, textiles, and agriculture have helped Vietnam become a major player in global supply chains.
3. Benefits of Export
-
GDP Growth: Export expansion directly increases production output and drives GDP.
-
Job Creation: Export industries create millions of jobs, especially in manufacturing, agriculture, and logistics. The International Labour Organization (ILO) estimates that one in five jobs worldwide is linked to global supply chains.
-
Attracting Investment: Strong export performance draws foreign direct investment (FDI), particularly in high-value sectors such as electronics and renewable energy.
-
Competitiveness & Innovation: Exporters must continuously innovate, adopt advanced technologies, and improve product quality to meet international standards.
-
Global Integration: Export fosters economic cooperation, enabling countries to strengthen diplomatic ties and join global value chains.
4. Challenges and Risks
Despite its advantages, export dependency comes with risks. According to Reuters (2025), nearly 30% of Vietnam’s GDP is tied to exports to the U.S., leaving the economy vulnerable to tariff measures. New tariffs of up to 46% could reduce Vietnam’s GDP by 2% (Wall Street Journal, 2025). This demonstrates the importance of diversifying export markets and reducing reliance on a single trade partner.
5. Conclusion
Exports remain a cornerstone of economic growth and global integration. For Vietnam, they have powered GDP expansion, created jobs, attracted investment, and elevated the country’s position in global trade. However, export dependency also highlights the need for strategic diversification and innovation to maintain resilience amid global uncertainties. Governments and enterprises must work together to strengthen competitiveness, explore new markets, and ensure that exports continue to serve as a sustainable engine of growth.
