How to Specify Coir Netting for Civil Engineering Projects — Mesh Density, Roll Size, and Load Requirements

For civil engineers, landscape architects, and procurement managers working on slope stabilization, embankment protection, or ecological restoration, coir netting offers a proven biodegradable alternative to synthetic geotextile products. However, selecting the wrong specification — mesh that is too open for the soil type, yarn that is too fine for the hydraulic load, or rolls that are too narrow for the installation width — can result in premature failure, cost overruns, or re-work on site.

This guide walks through the key specification parameters for coir netting in civil engineering applications so that buyers can communicate requirements clearly to suppliers and receive product that performs as intended.

Understanding the basic structure of coir netting

Coir netting is produced by spinning dry coconut fiber into yarn — either single-twist for lighter applications or double-twist for higher tensile demand — and then weaving the yarn into an open-mesh sheet on a loom frame. The final product is supplied in rolls, compressed into bales for transport. All structural and performance properties of the net flow from four variables: yarn type, mesh opening size, net weight per square meter, and roll dimensions.

Parameter 1 — Mesh opening size

Mesh opening size is the single most important specification decision for erosion control applications. It determines how much soil particle movement is permitted through the net and how effectively seeds are retained on the surface during revegetation.

A 1x1cm mesh is the tightest standard configuration. It is appropriate for fine-grained soils such as silts and clays on steep slopes or in high-rainfall environments where small particles are highly mobile. It is also the preferred mesh for hydroseeding applications where seed retention is critical in the first weeks after installation.

A 2x2cm mesh is the most widely used specification for general slope protection, road talus, and riverbank work. It balances soil retention with drainage and allows roots to penetrate freely through the net into the underlying soil.

A 4x4cm mesh is suited for coarser soils, rocky substrates, or sites where the primary function is structural reinforcement and vegetation anchoring rather than fine particle control. It allows maximum water and air flow and is commonly used in coastal dune stabilization and reforestation projects on degraded hillsides.

For projects with variable terrain, specifying a finer mesh on the upper slope where water velocity is highest and a coarser mesh at the lower toe where drainage is the priority can optimize both performance and cost.

Parameter 2 — Yarn type: single-twist vs double-twist

Single-twist yarn is produced by spinning coir fiber in one direction. It is lighter, more flexible, and lower in cost. It is suitable for low-gradient slopes, light landscaping, garden decoration, and organic livestock bedding where tensile load is not a primary concern.

Double-twist yarn involves a second counter-spin that locks the fibers more tightly, significantly increasing tensile strength and resistance to unraveling under hydraulic stress. For civil engineering applications — particularly riverbank protection, coastal embankments, and road talus with active water flow — double-twist yarn is the recommended specification. It maintains structural integrity longer under dynamic load, extending the effective protection period through the critical vegetation establishment phase, which typically spans 12 to 24 months after installation.

Parameter 3 — Roll dimensions and site coverage planning

Standard roll dimensions available from Vietnamese manufacturers include 1m x 20m, 2m x 20m, and 2m x 50m. For large civil works projects, custom widths and lengths can be produced to order, which reduces on-site cutting waste and speeds up installation.

When calculating roll requirements, account for a minimum 15 to 20cm overlap between adjacent rolls to ensure continuous coverage and prevent gap erosion. On steep slopes above 30 degrees, increase overlap to 30cm and plan for anchor pins or biodegradable staples at overlap seams to prevent net displacement before vegetation roots take hold.

For irregularly shaped sites — triangular embankment faces, curved riverbanks, or terraced hillsides — suppliers who offer triangular and custom-cut net shapes can reduce material waste significantly compared to cutting rectangular rolls on site.

Parameter 4 — Degradation timeline and project duration alignment

Coir netting degrades naturally over 2 to 5 years depending on soil moisture, temperature, and microbial activity. This timeline must align with the vegetation establishment target for your project. In tropical and subtropical climates with high rainfall and warm temperatures, degradation proceeds faster — typically 2 to 3 years — which suits fast-establishing grass and shrub species. In drier or cooler environments, the net persists longer, providing extended protection for slower-establishing native vegetation.

For projects where long-term structural performance beyond 5 years is required, coir netting alone is not sufficient and should be combined with permanent retaining structures or synthetic geogrid underlayers. In those configurations, coir netting serves as the surface erosion control and seed retention layer during the biological establishment phase, after which the root system assumes the permanent stabilizing function.

How to communicate your specification to a supplier

When requesting a quote from a coir net supplier, provide the following information to ensure accurate pricing and correct product supply: the mesh opening size required, yarn type preference (single or double-twist), roll width and length or total square meters required, any custom shape requirements, project location and climate zone if degradation timeline guidance is needed, and packaging requirements for container loading.

Reputable suppliers in Vietnam's Mekong Delta region, particularly those based in or sourcing from Ben Tre and Tra Vinh, can manufacture to custom specification with typical lead times of 2 to 4 weeks for standard orders and 4 to 6 weeks for custom dimensions or large volumes.
