Vietnam’s Exports: Seeking New Launchpads to Go Global

Amid global economic uncertainties, Vietnam continues to make a strong mark on the international trade map. As of August 2025, the country’s export turnover reached nearly USD 305 billion, up 14.4% compared to the same period last year. To sustain this momentum, key industries are actively seeking new “launchpads” — untapped markets, innovative production models, and diversified strategies.

  • Electronics: Expanding into less saturated markets

As the leading export sector, electronics brought in USD 100 billion in the first eight months, accounting for over 30% of total export turnover. According to the Vietnam Electronics Business Association, companies are now targeting emerging markets like India, Singapore, and Southeast Asia. India, in particular, is seen as a promising destination with less competition from China, offering a strategic foothold for Vietnamese electronics.

  • Textiles: Strong growth in European markets

The textile and garment industry recorded USD 30.8 billion in export value, up 7%, with a trade surplus of USD 14 billion. European countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain showed impressive growth rates of 20.9%, 12.2%, and 10.4% respectively. The Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association is proposing the creation of centralized hubs for raw materials to reduce import dependency and boost added value.

  • Wood Products: Breaking free from market dependence and building brands

Wood exports reached USD 11.2 billion, up 7%, but 90% of that value still comes from just five major markets — with the U.S. accounting for 56%. To avoid over-reliance, Vietnamese businesses are revamping their approach to traditional markets and exploring niche destinations like Spain and the Netherlands. Many are shifting from OEM production to developing their own brands, focusing on premium furniture design and exclusive collections.

  • National Strategy: Diversify markets and enhance value

Facing risks from shifting trade policies and geopolitical tensions, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, along with industry associations, is rolling out breakthrough strategies. The goal is to reduce dependence on major partners, diversify export destinations, and strengthen domestic capabilities of Vietnamese enterprises.

  • Conclusion

Exports are not just an engine of economic growth — they’re a reflection of national competitiveness. Vietnam’s efforts to find new “launchpads” show a bold transformation: from a manufacturing-based economy to one that’s creative, proactive, and sustainable.
